How to Install Laptop Memory Modules
Have you purchased a chunk of memory and wonder how you can install it into your laptop? The thing is, opening up the laptop and inserting a memory module can be pretty scary. You don’t want to spoil the laptop or anything while you’re doing it.
I’ve come up with a little guide to show you (in general) how you can install notebook memory modules. Hopefully you will then feel more confident when you perform the operation.
Let’s take a look at the steps required to install a notebook memory module. Don’t worry, it really isn’t that difficult, nor do you require the dexterity of a surgeon to do it.
Step 1: Power Down the Machine
The first and very important step is to always, always be sure to power down the laptop. If you open up the laptop while it is still powered up, you risk having components being shorted and destroyed. So shut down the computer and ensure that there are no power lights on.
Step 2: Locate the Memory Access Panel
The next step here is to locate the memory access panel. Usually, you can find this located on the bottom of the laptop. What you need to do is to refer to the laptop manual and see where this panel is.
Step 3: Remove the Access Panel
Next up, remove the screws from the access panel. Then slowly lift and remove the access panel itself. On some laptop models, you may find that the panels may slide out of the case. On other models, they might rotate away.
Step 4: Secure the New Memory Module
The next thing to do is to align the notch of the notebook memory module with that of the laptop’s memory slot. Now, slowly and gently insert the memory module into the slot. Usually, you should try to do it at a 45 degree angle. Don’t force the module in, just slide it in gently. Usually there are clamps in the slot to secure the module – once the module is in, you should clamp it down with these clamps.
Step 5: Replace the Memory Access Panel
Next thing you should is to close up the access panel. Just follow Step 3 in the reverse order (where you opened the panel). Line up the individual screw holes and get ready to fasten the panel to the case.
Step 6: Fasten the Access Panel to the Case
You’re almost there. Locate the screws used to fasten access panel the case. Next, just use a proper screwdriver and tighten those screws – but don’t use too much force or you might exert undue force on the laptop.
Step 7: Power Up the Laptop
Great! With the access panel has been securely fastened, you have finished installing the notebook memory module. What you should do now is to power up the laptop and make sure the new RAM has been detected by the BIOS. Refer to the user manual to see how to do this.
You should now have a good grasp of how to install notebook memory modules. The next time you purchase notebook memory modules, just follow the above steps and installation should be a breeze. Until next time, good luck and happy mobile computing!
